Day 1 of 5

List your ideas

Today’s task sounds almost too simple, and it is the one many people skip: get everything out of your head and onto paper. Write down 15 to 20 things you know something about or spend real time on. Do not judge them yet. That is tomorrow’s job. Today is about volume.

Work through these four categories. Aim for at least three or four ideas in each.
1

Hobbies and interests

What do you spend evenings or weekends doing? Cooking a particular cuisine, running, houseplants, vintage cameras or board games can all count. Nothing is too ordinary.

2

Work and past jobs

What have you done for a living, volunteered for or trained in? You probably know more about your former industry than you realise, including the apparently boring parts.

3

Problems you have solved

Think about the last time someone asked, “How do I...?” and you knew the answer. Fixing a bike, understanding a mortgage, helping a picky eater or arranging a home office can reveal useful ideas.

4

Things you read about

What do you search for or read about when nobody asks you to? That repeated curiosity is stronger evidence of genuine interest than enthusiasm you are trying to manufacture.

Worked example: Someone who works in accounting, runs at weekends and has a dog with allergies might list personal budgeting for freelancers, half-marathon training for beginners, dog food and allergies, home coffee brewing and managing anxiety around tax season. Five possible directions from one ordinary life.
Why this matters: Left alone, most people list only hobbies, which represent a narrow slice of what they know. Problems you have solved for other people often produce strong niche ideas because someone has already needed the answer.
Today’s task: Write 15 to 20 items across the four categories. Fifteen minutes is enough. Do not rank them, cross anything out or worry if some seem silly. Tomorrow you will narrow the list.
The honest part: There is no perfect niche and no guaranteed winner. This challenge helps you make a better-informed choice over five days. It does not remove the work required after you choose.

Day 1 is complete when your list exists.

Do not polish it. Do not research it yet. Save the list somewhere easy to find, then use tomorrow’s email to narrow it to three focused directions.
